Air Fryer Meringue

Air frying meringues is a bit unconventional as traditional meringues are typically baked at low temperatures in a conventional oven to achieve their light, airy texture. However, if you’re interested in trying out meringues in an air fryer, here’s a basic recipe and method you can follow

Ingredients:

2 large egg whites, at room temperature

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Ensure your air fryer basket or tray is clean and dry.
  2. Whip Egg Whites:
    • In a clean, dry mixing bowl, beat the egg whites on medium speed until foamy. Add a pinch of salt to help stabilize the egg whites.
  3. Gradually Add Sugar:
    • With the mixer running, gradually add the granulated sugar, about 1 tablespoon at a time. Continue beating until the sugar is completely dissolved and the meringue forms stiff peaks. This may take about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add Vanilla Extract (if using):
    • If desired, add the vanilla extract and mix until incorporated.
  5. Form Meringue Shapes:
    • Spoon or pipe the meringue mixture onto the air fryer basket or tray lined with parchment paper. Leave some space between each meringue as they will expand slightly.
  6. Air Fry:
    • Preheat your air fryer to 250°F (120°C).
    • Place the meringues into the air fryer basket or onto the tray. Depending on the size of your air fryer and meringues, you may need to work in batches.
  7. Cooking Time:
    • Air fry the meringues at 250°F (120°C) for about 30-40 minutes, or until the meringues are dry and crisp. Check them periodically to ensure they are not browning too quickly.
  8. Cooling:
    • Once cooked, turn off the air fryer and let the meringues cool completely in the air fryer with the door slightly open. This will help prevent them from becoming sticky due to trapped moisture.
  9. Serve:
    • Once completely cooled and crisp, serve the meringues immediately or store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a few days.

Tips:

  • Room Temperature Egg Whites: Using room temperature egg whites allows them to whip up to a greater volume.
  • Clean Equipment: Ensure your mixing bowl and beaters are completely clean and dry to achieve the best meringue texture.
  • Storing Meringues: Store meringues in an airtight container at room temperature. They may become slightly soft if stored in a humid environment.

While air frying meringues may yield slightly different results compared to baking in a conventional oven, it’s an interesting alternative if you want to experiment with your air fryer. Adjustments may be needed based on your specific air fryer model and size.
